THIEVES & BANDITS
1835-1945

The Greek rebellion against the Ottomans began in 1821. Kapodistrias was the first Governor of the new Greek nation in 1828.
Amouri and the farmland surrounding the village ends in the hands of the friends of the Turks who were preparing for at least 20-30 years for the transition.

During the same time the village because of its secluded location and strategic location to Lamia and the mountains hosts teams of thieves and bandits. Greece was not prepared for the independence and what followed was a struggle for control of small places like this one. Murders, abductions and intimidation was the norm for this era.

Most people worked the land by hand or herded sleep, goats and lambs to make ends meet. Having a few horses or mules to till your land, it was luxury at the time. This was ideal for the Thieves and Bandits because they would roam the area and hide. There was no authority to mess with these individuals in or around Amouri. It's remarkable, Amouri had underground tunnels who were dedicated to those who wanted to move around the village in disguise and never be stopped or found by those who were avoiding in the first place.
